Requirements for any of the Majors,
Minors or Cognate Areas within
the Department of Classics:
Majors:
The department offers a major
program of study of 24 credits in Classical Civilization
(for which Latin/Greek language mastery is not a requirement);
or a major in Classical Latin; or a major in Classical
Greek; and also a major in the Classical Languages
(both Greek and Latin). The candidate for the bachelor of
arts degree in Classical Languages will take at least 24
credits in Latin or in Greek with a minimum of 18 credits
in one language and six credits in the other.
All credits applied to the
major must be at the 200 level or above. Additional credits
are required of any major; these are in either classical
archaeology or ancient history or classical literature or
classical art or ancient philosophy.
The department maintains
a collaborative arrangement with our School of Education
which can allow a student to graduate with both a B.A. degree
from the McAnulty College, a B.S. degree from the School
of Education and also with Pennsylvania certification in
Latin.

Minors
or Education Cognate Areas offered by the Department of
Classics:
The Department offers a 12
credit minor and a 15 credit cognate area in Classical
Civilization with concentrations in Graeco-Roman Civilization
or Ancient History or Ancient Archaeology or Ancient Art
and Literature (all credits are above the 100 level); a
minor in the Latin language (all credits above the
100 level); and a minor in the Greek language (all
credits above the 100 level).
Students may enroll in the
program after consultation with both their major advisor
and with the Chairman of the Department of Classics (412-396-6450).
