Course Objectives: Two semesters of Basic Greek (103/104) will furnish the student with sufficient grammar and syntax to enable him to read the classics of ancient Greek literature in prose and verse.  Greek 103 will introduce the student to the declensions of nouns, the uses of noun cases, and the conjugation of verbs in indicative, subjunctive and optative moods. Frequent readings of passages in the original Greek will develop in the student the ability to read Greek literature.

No prerequisites are rquired, and no knowledge of other languages is presupposed.

• H. L. Crosby & J. N. Schaeffer, An Introduction to Greek.  Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, April 2003. ISBN: 0-86516-554-8

Requirements: There will be an examination at some point after the Review Lessons in Crosby and Schaeffer (that is, after lessons V, XI, XX, XXVII, etc.) in addition to a final examination. The lowest exam grade will be dropped in calculating the student's final grade, provided all exams have been taken on time. There is no makeup allowed on exams.

Final Exam: The final examination will be held in the regularly assigned classroom according to the University final exam schedule. According to that schedule, the final exam will be on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 from 8:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Departmental Policies:

• Academic Integrity: Each student's grade should reflect only that student's achievement. Thus cheating, plagiarism, assisting or allowing someone else to violate academic honesty are each grounds for receiving a grade of "F" for the course. • Office Hours: The professor is available for individual help during posted office hours or by appointment.
• Attendance: Missed classes may number no more than twice the credits per semester (including excused absences). Excessive absence may result in automatic failure.
• Final Grades: A(4.0), B(3.0), C(2.0), D(1.0) or F(0). There will be no plus/minus grades assigned for final grades.
• Physical Limitations: Any student who feels that, due to physical disabilities, psychological disabilities, or learning disabilities, special assistance may be required to complete the course successfully MUST both a) be registered with the Duquesne University Office of Special Student Services for the disability, and b) inform the instructor by the third hour of the class meeting. Disabilities which are not substantiated by the Duquesne University Office of Special Student Services or which are made known later than the third hour of class meeting may render ineffectual the provision of assistance required to complete the course successfully.
