Course Objective:  This course is intended to increase a student's knowledge of scientific terminology through the study of Latin and Greek scientific roots. Although science, pharmacy, and nursing students, as well as those in other health science fields, will directly benefit from the course, all students, regardless of their majors, will gain understanding of the English language.

Textbooks: (Click on textbook title for link to publisher.)

Required: Medical Terminology, Dunmore and Fleischer ISBN 0-8036-0032-1, F. A. Davis Company, 2004

Recommended: Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, (ISBN: 0-8036-1207-9) F.A. Davis, 2005

Requirements: Exams will be given at appropriate intervals throughout the course (approximately every two weeks). The student's lowest exam grade will be dropped provided all exams have been taken on time. No make-ups are allowed. Students are expected to keep up with all homework assignments and to be able to discuss the lessons in class. Class participation is taken into consideration in determining a student's course grade.

In addition, each student will be asked to prepare an oral presentation, approximately 15 minutes in length, discussing a disease, bodily system, or other medical topic, giving attention to the etymology of the terms involved in the topic chosen. This presentation will have the value of one exam.

Final Exam: The final examination will be held in the regularly assigned classroom and according to the final exam schedule. According to that schedule, the final will be on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 1:15 p.m. until 3:15 p.m.
